Yes, when used correctly. Professional fluoride treatments use small, controlled amounts applied by your child's dental team, and fluoride has been a cornerstone of pediatric cavity prevention for decades, recommended by the American Dental Association.
What we apply at the visit sets quickly on the teeth, and the amounts are appropriate for children. If you have questions or concerns about fluoride, bring them – it is a conversation we welcome, not one we dodge.
Fluoride varnish is the form designed with little ones in mind: a tiny amount, painted on, that hardens on contact with saliva – which is exactly why it is used safely even for toddlers.
At home, the same principle applies in your toothpaste amounts: a rice-grain smear for children under three, a pea-sized amount from about three to six, with a parent handling the brushing. We will show you what each process should look like at the visit.

Teeth are cleaned first, the fluoride is painted on with a small brush, it sets in moments, and your child is done – no discomfort, no downtime. We will give you the simple do's and don'ts for the rest of the day, like briefly holding off on eating and drinking so the fluoride can do its work.
For most kids, fluoride treatment happens at each six-month checkup, with your child's dentist adjusting frequency for higher cavity risk.
Two fluoride treatments a year are included in our membership plan – alongside the cleanings and exams they pair with – so prevention stays simple and predictable for families without insurance.

Dr. Paul Kennedy, known to his patients as “Dr. Paul,” is a lifelong resident of Corpus Christi with a deep passion for improving children's oral health.
He attended Windsor Park Elementary, Baker Middle School, and graduated from Mary Carroll High School. He then earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Baylor University and a Master of Science from Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. Dr. Paul completed his dental degree at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco and received his certificate in pediatric dentistry from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
Dr. Paul is actively involved in professional organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the Texas Dental Association (TDA).
Outside of the office, he enjoys fishing, boating, and spending time outdoors with his wife, Merritt, and their two children.

After the cleaning, fluoride is painted onto the teeth and sets in moments – quick, comfortable, and done as part of the regular checkup.
Typically at each six-month checkup, with frequency adjusted for your child's cavity risk. Membership plan families have two treatments a year included.
Most plans cover fluoride for children as preventive care, and we accept most insurance plans as well as Medicaid and CHIP. Membership families have it included.
